The global market for marine ornamental fish exceeds 1 billion US dollars. Europe is the leading importer, with around 24 million US dollars each year across 1,400 species. 90% of ornamental fish are still caught in the wild. Today, only 1 fish in 4 survives capture, transport and the stress caused by the change in diet and environment. Wild fish generally have a shorter lifespan than farmed fish and are also more prone to disease.
Our R&D projects focus on developing innovative protocols incorporating copepods to optimize the rearing performance of species already produced in aquaculture, facilitate the successful rearing of more demanding ornamental species, and support the domestication and production of new species. Ultimately, these efforts aim to reduce pressure on wild fish stocks.
